Sedation Dentistry

At Katy Kids Dentist, we want your child to feel completely relaxed and at ease. Sometimes, a child may have a true fear of the dentist. This can make even a simple exam a fearful experience. We offer sedation dentistry for appointments and oral procedures. Depending on the sedation that is right for the visit, their dentist will discuss the options available. Using sedation can make your child’s experience a much more enjoyable and relaxing experience.

Types of Sedation:

  • Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas) – This is the mildest form of sedation. Nitrous oxide is normally used for simple procedures when a child just needs to feel calm and relaxed. The nitrous oxide is given through a mask mixed with oxygen. Within moments, your child will feel more relaxed and at ease. They will still be able to respond to the dentist if needed, however they will not be as bothered by smells and sounds. As soon as the appointment is over the effects will wear off within 3-5 minutes.
  • Oral Sedation – Given in liquid form, oral sedation takes affect over a 30-60 minute period and lasts for several hours. The sedation will keep working throughout the entire visit. Your child will be conscious and relaxed throughout the appointment.
  • IV Sedation – This sedation is given through an IV. Our anesthesiologist will carefully insert the IV and almost immediately your child will feel deeply relaxed. IV Sedation is a stronger form of sedation and will take a little while to wear off after their appointment. With IV sedation, your child will remember only a few moments from their visit or they may not remember anything at all.
